RURAL BARN CONVERSION

The diversification of farms & advances in agriculture through the 19th & 20th century led to the expansion of mechanised farming. This lead to many mothballed & redundant buildings mostly located in rural settings on the outskirts of smaller villages. For this project the team looked at proposals to repurpose the former farm's building stock. Careful & considerate designs were developed to repurpose the buildings into a home. A careful process of heritage evaluation considered the value of the exiting built fabric from a variety of perspectives including; sustainability, current condition, material quality, robustness, architectural merit, site context & impact on the character of the area, to inform the final proposal & offer a considered design to a sensitive rural site.
